CMA and CMA Final Grades

Hi Everyone

Your final grades are on the gradebook.

Please check them and email me with your section in the subject box if their is a mistake in entering the grades - for example, if I have put "0" and you have completed the assignment. (Send me a copy of the assignment.)

If you are failing please come and see me in your class-time on Sunday. Do not leave it any later as the supervisor is asking for the final grades.

Please do not come to me asking me for higher grades just because you do not like your low grade!!!
I do not change grades.

Congratulations to those of you who have got an "A".

Good luck in your future studies.

Have your prepared for your presentation?

I am very aware that many students have ot prepared at all for their final presentation. Today I am going to put a D mark into the gradebook for everyone so that they can see what their final mark will be if they do not prepare.

Of course, it could be even lower! I gave a zero for a presentation last week - the student was an excellent Englsih speaker but he just had not prepared at all and did not know the subject.

I also gave 4 100%s.

Prepare, prepare, prepare!!!!

First Presentation - Serious Video Game Review 25%

Look at this infographic about how video games are changing education

How Video Games Are Changing Education - Online Colleges

Watch this video and take notes

It is an excellent overview of the genre of "serious games" by Asi Burak, Co-President of the non-profit organization "Games For Change":

With your partner choose one of the high-lighted games below or one of these from the following site or research another one on the Internet and ask me about it before starting your PowePoint.

Sweathops

Darfar is Dying

Ayiti - the Cost of Life

Against all Odds

Raise the Village

  1.      Take time to read about it and really understand what it is about
  2.      Play the game several times
  3.      Prepare a PowerPoint

Your presentation is going to be a review of the video game.

The most effective “games for change” strike a fine balance between educational value and game play.

Video Game Review:

Using an academic style and the format below, prepare an 8 -10 slide PowerPoint presentation reviewing your chosen game.

Section 1 : General Information

Use the games’ official websites as well as other internet sources to research general information about the simulations or game.  In effect, answer as many as possible of the following:

-       the “who” (developers)

-       the “what” (brief description)

-       the “where” (location developed)

-       the “when” (year)

-       the “why” (why was game created?)

Section  2: Summary

Give a general summary of how the game is played.  Show that you have explored all the features of the games.  Some questions you can answer include:

-       What does the player do? (what actions does he/she take?)

-       What are the player’s goals? (what is he/she striving to achieve?)

-       What challenges does the player face and what makes achieving them a struggle?

-       What are the (general) rules?

-       What are the possible outcomes?

Section 3: Connection to the real world

Explain how the games simulate the real world?  Some questions you can answer include:

-       What are some of the hardships you come up against?

-       What are some of the choices you are forced to make?

-       What actions helped your situation?

Section 4: Critique

Are the game developers successful in their aims?  Why or why not?

Section 5: Rating

What rating do you give each of these games? (use some type of rating system – e.g. 3 out of 5 stars)  Briefly explain.

Section 6: Demonstration

Give a brief demonstration of how the game is played

Section 6: Conclusion

Section 7: Bigliography
